The video starts off with Matoma in the house chilling, he starts setting up for a party. People start showing up and things kick off. When Coachella girl walks in, Matoma is immediately entranced by her. The party builds, people are bringing in kegs, balloons, friends. Matoma follows Coachella girl around the room party as she explores, always a few steps behind her, performing the song to her while she only half pays attention.
As the camera rotates around the room we see the party in it's different stages, even circling back to Matoma in an empty room, and then back to the party. She continues to make her way through the party as if the warping of time has no effect on her with Matoma always right behind her. In different areas of the party D.R.A.M. is seen performing his verse. Coachella Girl walks through his performances, the camera moves seamlessly around the room, a DJ booth is getting set up by Magic! Matoma is desperately trying to get the girl’s attention, she warms up to Matoma, At each hook the tempo of the camera movement speeds up and she continues to lead him through this Coachella themed party that as it lapses in time. She’s teasing and luring him on the whole time.
At the end of the song she makes her way toward the door. D.R.A.M. is passed out on the couch and Magic! is passed out on the floor surrounded by a few lasting partiers. She vanishes out of the same door she entered in as Matoma hopelessly watches her walk away except exiting the door, is many copies of the same girl, leaving, while Matoma is left by himself.
With a motion control rig the same movement can be repeated exactly as many times as needed. Nothing about the movement changes so when a cut is made between one take and another it appears as though there was no cut at all. This allows the filmmaker to warp time and space on screen seamlessly. This technique was used to create the trippy effect seen in the weeknd’s Often. By putting the camera in the dead center of all these set ups we can circle through the party as the rooms change and follow the couple in a way that is interesting and puzzling to the viewer.
